PLEASE,
Since 2008, the Pinhook has had its doors open for everyone. And, no, not just for the stereotypical jaded punk bro who doesn't fit in with his peers or for the peo- ple who want a place to drink on the week- end. The Pinhook has its doors open for the outcast and oppressed. The Pinhook's doors are open for trans people, for wom- en, for people who aren't straight, for dis-
abled people, for people of every race and ethnicity, for victims of abuse, and, by god, the Pinhook keeps us all safe.
Because of an amass- J ment of financial burdens, those very doors are being threatened to close. To me, and to so many others in the Triangle, the Pinhook represents something bigger than a place to see your favorite band Going to shows at the Pinhook for me is not outside of my comfort zone. EVER WONDERED HOW YOU CAN GET MORE NVOLVED IN YOUR MUSIC SCENE? IF YOU’VE VER WANTED TO SET UP A DIY SHOW, OR ARE WONDERING WHAT GOES INTO PLANNING ONE, ERE ARE SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS ON HOW TO OOK A SHOW. **DISCLAIMER: BOOKING A SHOW IS ANYTHING BUT “SIMPLE” ,**
1. Make sure you've got a space available! This can be a venue, a basement, a bookstore (RIP Nice Price), a living room, a record store, etc. Bars are okay spots for shows, but age restrictions suck. **Give yourself a month minimum
beforehand to avoid conflicts with other shows, last minute band cancellations, finding a PA, and generally not wanting to tear your hair out.**
2. Get your paws on a PA! You'll need some amplification for your mics and such so you can hear loud and clear. The space may have one already, but if
they don't, ask around with your music pals, especially those that are in bands. Also, make sure someone's on board to run sound during the show. It can be as simple or as EQ-y and complex as you want! **Acoustic/stripped down shows
are another alternative! This will keep any noise complaints to a minimum, and is also generally lower-risk and lower-stress.**
3. Gather your talent! Touring bands bring a new/exciting element to a show, while local bands bring a familiar/guaranteed element. Mix it up to ((hopefully)) ensure a good show and a decent crowd! **Make Sure you've got a place for
your touring bands to sleep! Sometimes they can/will find one on their own, but definitely don't leave them hangin'.**
4. Promote your event! Two weeks in advance is a good guideline for when
to start promotion. Make a flier, a Facebook event, tell your friends, get it on the WKNC Rock Report, anything you can to spread the word! Make sure you include: who's playing, time/date, place, and donation amount. If it's a house show, do NOT post your address! Just say to ~*ask*~ Also, if you have a dollar amount required for entry, you've got to pay taxes to The Man or something,
so make sure you put the word “donation” next to it! **If this is a sober show or a safe(r) space, PLZ make sure you denote this on the flier!! If you don't know what these are, look ‘em up and consider them for yr show. ~**

5. Have an early load-in time for the bands to get their gear inside and (may- be) set up // soundcheck. This also provides cushion time for getting lost, flat tires, "“dog-ate-my-drumset” (classic...), etc. Check-in with bands a week or two and then a day or two in advance to make sure that everyone's still on board and good to go! Exchange phone numbers to make communication easy. **Peo- ple usually expect a show to run on *punk time,* so if you're trying to keep a tight schedule, say so! Make it clear in your promo AND to the bands!**
6. Collect donations! The number one gold star trait of a house or DIY-space host is someone who brings around the donation box! It sucks, and sometimes people look at you funny. But at the end of the day, your touring bands NEED ((not want)) gas money and deserve a lil’ extra for being rad.
7. Have a good dang time! Thanks for putting together a cool event where people can come, hang, and keep the scene alive.

WKNC’S HIP-HOP
In honor of Underground Hip-Hop headlining night two of Double Barrel 13, WKNC takes a look back at the last 13 years of the most influential North Carolina Hip-Hop
UO 5-700 9th Wonder and Cesar Comanche's creation, Justus League, was in full swing by 2003. The collection included artists L.E.G.:A.C.Y, The Away Team, Darien Brockington, Little Brother, Edgar Allen Floe, Median, Chaundon, Cesar Comanche, 9th Wonder, Buckshot, Sean Price, and Skyzoo. The Hall of Justus was founded by Little Brother's former manager, Big Dho, as an outlet for the collective. National recognition to Little Brother is achieved when Jay Z reached out to 9th Wonder to help produce his track “Threat”. Meanwhile at NC State, students with a common interest in hip-hop come together to form the Hip Hop Organization (H20).

9th Wonder leaves Little Brother and the remaining members, Phonte and Big Pooh, decide to leave record label, Atlantic Records, after failing to deliv- er expectations on the their second album, "The Minstrel Show" (one dope. ass. record, like how'd that shit not blow up? anyways...). It was around this time that J. Cole started receiving recognition after releasing his mixtape “The Come Up." J. Cole would go on to say WKNC is the shit. Kooley High meets at NC State and releases their tape “Raleigh's Finest,” a collection of NC's young blood in the local scene.

’ «/ With the fall of Little Brother, rapper Phonte collabs with producer Nicolay to release Leave It All Behind. Big Pooh goes on to release two solo albums, The Delightful Bars and Rapper's Delight. 9th Wonder goes on to produce tracks for some of the BIGGEST names in hip-hop and R&B. We're talking Jay Z, Destiny's Child, De La Soul, Sean Price, Wale. Kooley High release their first official tape, The Summer Sessions EP and continue to rep the local NC scene

Rhapsody of Kooley High gains national recognition with the release of her mixtape “Return of the B-Girl” and continues to grow the following year
in 2011 with “Thank H.E.R. Now.” Drique London, NC State Alum, releases the anticipated “Nike SB: The Mixtape “after repeated setbacks from the original release date in 2008. King Mez plays Hopscotch and Double Barrel Benefit VII. Professor Toon releases Hulk Smash Music Video. Deniro Farrar releases his debut mixtape, "Feel This.” Kooley High releases “Eastern
Standard Time." ie
Deniro Farrar continues putting in work releasing “Kill Or Be Killed,” which lands as Stereogum’s “Mixtape of the Week” in October 2012. Well$ releases “¢ay La V.” Deniro Releases both “The Patriarch” and “The Patriarch II” within months of each other. Charlotte scene gets hype as shit. Rhapsody releases “The Idea of Beautiful” on Jamla Re- cords. SkyBlew Releases “Your Dream Is BLEW Reality” on Bandcamp.
In 2015, SkyBlew releases "Jazz For Autumn Kismet" And "Race For Your Life, Sky- Blew" a few months later which climbs to Bandcamp's second best seller. This is also when SkyBlew teams up with The Digi Destined for a full band. SkyBlew basically achieves stardom in South Korea and is invited to play Hopscotch 2015. Professor Toon plays Hopscotch in 2014 and shortly after collabs with Made of Oak (of Sylvan Esso) and Well$ (Track: Side Rides yet to be released). A few months later Toon re- leases "Take Notes" on bandcamp. Deniro Farrar interviews on “Sway In The Morning” in 2014. His latest work Cliff Of Death II with producer Young God is released in 2015 Deniro also collabs with Denzel Curry and DKAD to release "Bow Down." In 2016, Deniro is now signed to Vice Records and Warner Brothers Records and continues to
rep Cult Rap, truly raising a new and substantive genre of rap.

"Canto de Lobos is an all-Spanish speaking music radio show. Our goal is to show the Ra- leigh area the diversity and beauty of Spanish music by playing all genres. We play salsa, rock, merengue, pop, rap, bachata, edm, and many more. Canto de Lobos aims to help Hispanic/Latino artists and groups by having exclusive interviews, giving away tickets, spreading news about events during the show, and more. CDL also hopes to assist those who are interested in learning Spanish. We are on Sundays from 3 to 4p.m.
Our goal is to show the Raleigh area the diversity and beauty of Spanish music by playing all genres.
